Changes in host basal area explain associational resistance of mixed forests to primary pests

چکیده
Tree species diversity generally has positive effects on forest primary productivity and resistance to natural perturbations, but diversity-function relationships can vary with site conditions. Recently, studies in experiments have shown that tree local climate, particular drought intensity, interactively affect insect herbivory. On the other hand, many focused response of forests terms growth without analysing concomitant susceptibility pests. It is interest understand combined host tree, since resource concentration a determining factor pest’s choice. We used experiment where conditions were both manipulated evaluate their interactive maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aït.) two pests (i.e. infesting healthy trees): stem borer (PSB) Dioryctria sylvestrella, processionary moth (PPM; leaf chewer), Thaumetopoea pityocampa. Using structural equation models, we investigated direct indirect mediated by resources) presence birch total number attacks PPM PSB, same plots year. showed pine-birch more resistant PSB than monocultures. Furthermore, found this associational pattern was due trees attacks, possibly related disrupting non-host volatiles (NHVs), also indirect, resource-mediated whereby reduced amount resources available Drought modulated only for attacks. Overall, our work improves understanding diversity-herbivory helps explain how climate might modulate such relationships.

A Basal Area Increment-Based Approach of Site Productivity Evaluation for Multi-Aged and Mixed Forests
Accurate estimates of forest site productivity are essential for environmental planning and forest management. In this study, we developed a new productivity index, hereafter termed basal area potential productivity index (BAPP), to estimate site productivity for irregular and complex forests characterized by multi-aged, multi-species, and multi-layer stands. We presented the biological relevan...

Associational Resistance and Associational Susceptibility: Having Right or Wrong Neighbors
Specific plant associations may decrease (associational resistance, AR) or increase (associational susceptibility, AS) the likelihood of detection by, and/or vulnerability to, herbivores. We discuss presumed mechanisms leading to AR and AS, suggest others, and conduct meta-analyses on plant and herbivore traits affecting AR and AS, and the effects of habitat. Specific plant associations determi...
متن کاملParadigm Shifts in Research on Host Plant Resistance to Insect Pests
Host plant resistance assumes central role in pest management in order to increase production and productivity of the crops. Conventional breeding in conjunction with molecular techniques and transgenic approaches have a great promise to reduce pest associated crop losses, and accelerate the progress in developing cultivars with resistance to insects. Although, considerable progress has been ma...
